Shelf Life
Shelf Life, 2001
(mdf, shelfing, plywood, milk crates, plant, acrylic paint, assorted materials)
The works in this show address the methods by which we infuse generic objects with a tailored specificity through our attempts to "customize" our relationship to our things.
Shelf
(various materials), 2001
approx 8’ x 12 ’x 4’
This shelving unit takes the form of a record of decisions – it takes on a character of its own as it records the personal touch of the builder. The accumulation of slightly incongruous pieces suggests that the unit has adapted, over time, to the specific needs of the owner. This piece is concerned with the methods by which we infuse the impersonal with a tailored specificity.

Chair
(various materials), 2001
3’ x 4’ x 1’
The various chairs I have made refer to design but are also absurd and useless constructions. The convenience and practicality of the attached shelf is usurped by the painfully inconvenient bolts in the seats of the chairs.

approx 5’ x 3’ x 2’
Last year's model.

Stacks, from the Plans for Living series, 2001
(various materials)
approx 3’x3’x3’
A series that explores the limits of choice within a closed set of possibilities. This series came in response to the accumulation of items, both useful and unwanted, that made their way into my studio. A physical process of re-arranging this mass of clutter was documented on a daily basis over the period of three months, resulting in over 80 configurations. Only two arrangements were finalized since they shared components.

Drawings - from the Plans for Living series
(pencil and marker on paper) - 2000-2001
11" x 17"
The exercise of re-arranging my accumulated furniture and materials was documented on a daily basis for a period of three months. Over 80 configurations resulted. Only two arrangements were finalized since each of them shared the same components. I exhibited these labored furniture stacks and also made this series of drawings as way of recording possible arrangements.
